Houthi Gains in Yemen Put Saudi Arabia Under Pressure as Red Sea Risks Rise
The Houthis’ advance along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and control of territory near Bab el-Mandeb have increased pressure on Saudi Arabia and raised concerns over regional shipping and energy security.
Saudi Arabia is facing increased strategic pressure after Yemen’s Houthi movement advanced along the Red Sea coast and captured territory and islands near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, according to a Reuters report citing Western, regional and Yemeni officials and sources.
The developments have affected an important maritime corridor linking the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Bab el-Mandeb is a key route for international trade and energy shipments, making the Houthi gains significant for regional security and global supply chains.
Reuters reported that the advance was linked by officials and analysts to divisions among anti-Houthi Yemeni factions, weaknesses in the Saudi-backed command structure, limited Saudi air support and an underestimation of Houthi preparations. One regional diplomat cited by Reuters said the group had quietly assembled a force of about 100,000 fighters.
The retreat of Saudi-backed Yemeni forces also left behind weapons and military equipment supplied by the United States and Saudi Arabia, according to regional sources cited by Reuters. The development could increase the Houthis’ military capabilities and provide them with additional information about equipment used by their opponents.
Saudi Arabia has also faced uncertainty over the level of international military support available for a counteroffensive. Reuters reported that US and European officials said their governments were not prepared to provide direct military backing. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman subsequently travelled to Cairo seeking Egyptian assistance related to the Red Sea situation, although there was no immediate confirmation that Egypt would provide military support.
The escalation comes amid wider tensions involving Iran and its regional allies. Reuters reported that the Houthi gains could give Iran and its partners additional leverage around two strategically important waterways, the Bab el-Mandeb and the Strait of Hormuz. The Houthis deny being controlled by Tehran, while Saudi Arabia and its allies accuse Iran of supporting the group; Iran has denied those accusations.
The developments have also raised concerns for energy markets and maritime trade. Saudi oil shipments have already faced disruption, while the broader regional conflict has contributed to heightened risks around major shipping routes.
