Voter ID and biometric authentication proposed as alternatives to Aadhaar for government welfare payments in India.

The minister's announcement also comes alongside the government's broader efforts to strengthen village-level governance through the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Gram Swaraj Yojana. The initiative aims to improve the functioning of gram panchayats and encourage greater local revenue generation.

Important implementation questions remain unanswered, including whether the proposed system will apply to selected schemes or a wider range of welfare programmes. The government has not yet announced detailed guidelines or a formal notification establishing the change.

For beneficiaries, the eventual impact will depend on the scheme-wise rules, authentication arrangements and safeguards introduced before any transition from the existing Aadhaar-based system.
