Whirlpool of India has introduced AI-powered freshness detection technology in its Luxuriem range of four-door refrigerators, aiming to help households monitor stored fruits and vegetables and reduce avoidable food waste. Announced on October 27, 2026, the technology uses the company’s proprietary 6th Sense AI platform to identify changes associated with produce ripening.

At the centre of the system is Whirlpool’s iFresh Sensor Engine, which incorporates a sensor inside the refrigerator’s crisper drawer. The sensor tracks ethylene, a naturally occurring gas released by fruits and vegetables as they ripen. According to the company, the system scans the produce every 10 seconds.

When the system detects an increase in ethylene levels associated with possible over-ripening, it alerts users to check the stored produce. The feature is intended to help households identify items that may need attention before visible changes become apparent. It does not stop the natural ripening process or independently guarantee that food is fresh or spoiled.

Whirlpool says the technology has been developed to account for differences in how various fruits and vegetables release ethylene. Its Full-Spectrum Produce Detection system is designed to recognise a range of produce, including high-ethylene emitters such as apples, pears, kiwis, avocados and peaches, as well as lower-ethylene emitters such as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.

The refrigerator also includes a real-time interface that allows users to view freshness-related information. Whirlpool says the system can use feedback from users after an alert to adjust future notification thresholds, tailoring its alerts to household preferences.

The technology expands Whirlpool’s premium Luxuriem four-door refrigerator portfolio. The range is offered in capacities of 645 litres, 651 litres and 654 litres, with prices starting at ₹98,000. The refrigerators are expected to be available through leading retail stores and online platforms across India.

The launch addresses a common household challenge: fruits and vegetables bought in bulk can be pushed to the back of the refrigerator and forgotten. By providing alerts about changes associated with ripening, the company aims to give users greater visibility into the condition of their stored produce and help them prioritise what to check.

Nakul Tewari, vice-president of marketing at Whirlpool of India, said the technology was developed around the needs of consumers who want a more intuitive way to manage stored food. The company described the launch as an application of AI focused on an everyday household task.

The practical value of the system will depend on how accurately its sensors interpret changes across different types of produce and storage conditions. Alerts should be treated as prompts to inspect food rather than definitive assessments of safety or freshness. The launch reflects a broader effort by appliance manufacturers to integrate connected and intelligent features into everyday home appliances.
