Odisha Clears SiCSem Semiconductor Unit
₹3,406 Crore Investment to Build Integrated SiC Chip Facility Near Bhubaneswar
Odisha is set to strengthen its semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem after the Unit Approval Committee (UAC) of the Falta Special Economic Zone approved SiCSem Private Limited’s proposal to establish an integrated silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor facility near Bhubaneswar.
The project involves an investment of ₹3,406.25 crore and will be developed across 21.889 acres at the Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) Park in Info Valley-II. The facility is among the semiconductor projects approved for Odisha under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
The proposed plant will cover several stages of semiconductor production, including fabrication, assembly, testing, marking and packaging. SiCSem plans to manufacture SiC diodes and silicon-carbide MOSFETs, semiconductor devices used in applications requiring high power efficiency, high-temperature performance and faster switching.
According to the project proposal reviewed by Business Standard, the facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 4.8 million SiC diodes and 91.2 million SiC MOSFETs. The integrated manufacturing model is intended to strengthen domestic production of specialised power semiconductor devices and reduce dependence on overseas supply chains.
The project is also expected to generate significant export revenue. SiCSem is projected to record around ₹7,043 crore in export turnover during its first five years of operations, with estimated net foreign exchange earnings of approximately ₹4,523 crore over the same period. The facility is expected to create employment for around 1,270 people, particularly in the high-skilled semiconductor and electronics sector.
SiCSem is also building an R&D ecosystem around the project. The company has established the Silicon Carbide Research and Innovation Centre (SICRIC) at IIT Bhubaneswar, backed by an investment of ₹64 crore, to support research and innovation in SiC technology.
The approval comes as Odisha expands its semiconductor manufacturing base. Business Standard reported that the state has secured commitments from five semiconductor companies involving combined investments of ₹10,899 crore, covering manufacturing and related facilities. The developments are expected to add capacity across different parts of the semiconductor value chain in the state.
