Micron Begins Global Chip Shipments From Gujarat
Micron has started shipping finished DRAM and NAND memory products from its Sanand semiconductor facility in Gujarat to global customers as commercial production scales up.
US-based semiconductor manufacturer Micron Technology has begun shipping finished memory products from its Sanand facility in Gujarat to customers around the world, marking a significant step in the expansion of semiconductor manufacturing in India.
Micron Chairman and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said at Semicon India 2026 that commercial production at the Sanand facility began earlier this year. The plant is India's first semiconductor assembly and test facility and the first project under the India Semiconductor Mission, according to the company.
Finished DRAM and NAND memory products are now being dispatched from Gujarat for international customers. The facility is designed to serve both domestic and global demand as Micron progressively expands production.
The American semiconductor company is investing ₹22,516 crore in the Sanand plant, which has a production capacity of approximately 14 million units per week. Micron said current output at the facility already exceeds the memory requirements of the entire Indian market.
The company expects the scale of operations to increase rapidly. Mehrotra said Micron plans to assemble and test tens of millions of chips at Sanand during 2026, with production expected to reach hundreds of millions of chips next year.
Micron's presence in India extends beyond the Gujarat manufacturing facility. The company directly employs more than 7,000 people in the country, while its broader operations support tens of thousands of additional jobs across the semiconductor value chain.
Its India-based teams have contributed to more than 3,700 patents, inventions and disclosures, according to Mehrotra. Micron's centres in Hyderabad and Bengaluru are also part of the company's global technology network.
The company is further expanding its research presence through Micron Research Labs, extending its global research network into India. The initiative is expected to connect the company with government institutions, universities, startups, customers and research organisations, with a focus on technologies supporting scalable and sustainable artificial intelligence.
Micron is also working with 20 universities across India through its University Research Alliance, supporting research and industry-oriented design courses as the company seeks to strengthen the talent pipeline for India's growing semiconductor ecosystem.
