Apple Faces India Warranty Probe

India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has escalated its investigation into Apple’s software warranty terms following complaints linked to the iOS 18 update and reported problems with iPhone functionality.

The regulator ordered a detailed investigation on July 29, after receiving complaints that some iPhones developed issues including display and microphone problems following the software update. Consumers alleged that they were required to pay for repairs because Apple’s warranty terms do not cover software.

The CCPA’s case involves 75 complaints and alleges potential violations of consumer rights. Among the reported complaints were green, pink or white lines appearing on iPhone displays after the iOS 18 upgrade. Reuters reported that an iPhone 15 display repair can cost around ₹27,900, according to the regulator’s documents.

Apple has disputed the allegations. In an August response to investigators, the company said its software warranty exclusion is consistent with global industry practices and that users are informed about the terms before installing the software. Apple also said it had not identified any systemic issues or safety concerns with iOS 18 in India.

Apple further said that only around 11% of iPhones were still using iOS 18 by June 2026, while emphasizing that the complaints represented a limited portion of its installed base. The company has said it will work with Indian authorities to provide clarity regarding its response to customers.

The investigation could have wider implications for how technology companies communicate software warranty limitations to consumers in India. Under Indian consumer law, investigators can seek documents and conduct hearings before submitting a final report to the regulator.

If the regulator ultimately finds violations, Apple could face financial penalties, refund requirements or changes to its business practices, according to Reuters. No final finding has been made at this stage.
