Railways Clears ₹736 Crore Projects
The approved works cover Kavach 4.0, electronic interlocking, electric traction upgrades and a road overbridge across four railway zones.
Indian Railways has approved four safety and infrastructure projects worth a combined ₹736 crore to strengthen train safety, modernise signalling and traction systems, and improve operational efficiency.
The largest project involves deploying the indigenous Kavach 4.0 automatic train protection system across 607.7 route kilometres of the Lucknow Division of North Eastern Railway at a cost of ₹252 crore. Kavach is designed to help prevent trains from overshooting red signals by automatically applying brakes when required.
Railways has also approved Electronic Interlocking at seven stations in the Solapur Division of Central Railway at a cost of ₹209 crore. The modern signalling system is expected to strengthen signalling infrastructure and facilitate the implementation of Kavach.
Another ₹142-crore project will upgrade the electric traction system from 1x25 kV to 2x25 kV on the 73-route-kilometre Savalyapuram-Guntur section of South Coast Railway. The project covers 146 track kilometres and is aimed at increasing the capacity of the electric traction infrastructure.
The fourth project involves construction of a four-lane road overbridge in place of Level Crossing No. 53 on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section of Western Railway. The bridge has been approved at a cost of ₹133.2295 crore on a cost-sharing basis with the state government.
According to the Railway Ministry, the road overbridge will facilitate smoother road traffic movement and reduce interference with railway operations. Together, the projects cover safety systems, signalling, traction infrastructure and road-rail connectivity across multiple railway divisions.
