Trump Gives Xi Rare Airport Welcome in Washington

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington on September 23 for a three-day state visit, beginning a closely watched round of diplomacy between the world's two largest economies amid continuing disagreements over trade, advanced technology and geopolitical issues.

US President Donald Trump personally travelled to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to receive Xi, rather than waiting to formally welcome him at the White House — an unusual protocol gesture underscoring the importance Washington has attached to the visit.

Xi arrived with his wife Peng Liyuan, while Trump was accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump. The two couples greeted each other on the tarmac as Xi began his first state visit to Washington since 2015.

The two countries have been operating under a trade truce following earlier tariff tensions, while China's position in global manufacturing and its dominance in supplies of strategically important rare-earth minerals remain central issues in economic discussions.

Artificial intelligence and advanced technology are another major area of competition. Both governments have increasingly treated AI, semiconductor access and advanced computing capabilities as strategically important, making technology policy part of the wider US-China relationship.

The formal programme intensifies on September 24. According to the White House, Trump and Melania Trump will host Xi and Peng at a State Arrival Ceremony, including military ceremonial units and a flyover featuring a B-2 Spirit bomber and four F-22 Raptors.

Trump and Xi are then scheduled to hold their main bilateral discussions at the White House. A State Dinner in the East Room is scheduled for Thursday evening.

The visit will continue Friday with tea at the White House before the two couples travel to the National Archives in Washington, where they are scheduled to view historical records relating to US-China relations. The visit is due to conclude there.

Xi's arrival carries additional diplomatic symbolism because more than a decade has passed since his previous state visit to Washington in 2015, when Barack Obama was US president.

The Washington meetings are not taking place in isolation. Trump visited China earlier in 2026, and the two governments have maintained high-level contact while attempting to manage competition between the world's two biggest economies.

No major agreement should be assumed before the talks conclude. The immediate significance of Xi's arrival lies in the unusually high-level ceremonial treatment and the decision by both governments to continue direct engagement despite substantial differences across economic, technological and security issues.
