Tata Communications announced plans on October 26, 2026, to invest close to $450 million in high-speed connectivity infrastructure for India’s expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem. The project will involve building approximately 10,000 kilometres of new long-haul fibre-optic cables to connect major AI and data-centre corridors across the country.

The planned network, described by the company as an AI super highway, is designed to provide high-capacity, low-latency and resilient connectivity between data centres, cloud service providers, global capability centres and enterprise customers. Banks and other organisations that depend on reliable, high-speed data transmission are also among the potential users.

The rollout is planned in three phases. The first phase will focus on the Mumbai-Pune-Hyderabad-Chennai corridor, which connects several important technology and data-centre markets. Later phases are expected to extend the network into eastern and western India, including Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, known as GIFT City.

The new fibre infrastructure will be integrated with Tata Communications’ existing national and international network backbone. Connections to international cable landing stations are intended to help customers transfer data between Indian facilities and global AI and cloud hubs.

The investment reflects rising demand for digital infrastructure as businesses adopt AI applications, cloud computing and data-intensive services. AI systems require substantial volumes of data to move between computing facilities, making network capacity, speed and reliability increasingly important alongside computing power and electricity supply.

Tata Communications said the investment is intended to address the connectivity requirements of hyperscale cloud companies, emerging cloud providers, AI platforms, multinational enterprises and other digital businesses. The company estimates that India’s data-centre-to-data-centre connectivity market could exceed $1 billion over the medium term.

The planned expansion builds on Tata Communications’ existing terrestrial and subsea fibre infrastructure. By adding new long-distance routes and strengthening connections between domestic data-centre clusters, the company aims to expand its role in supporting India’s digital economy.

The announcement represents a planned investment rather than a completed network deployment. The project’s implementation will depend on phased execution, route development and the requirements of customers using the infrastructure.
