Indian equity benchmarks declined for a third consecutive session on Thursday, October 22, as rising crude oil prices and renewed inflation concerns weighed on investor sentiment. The escalating conflict in the Middle East kept oil prices elevated, raising concerns for India, one of the world’s largest crude oil importers.

At 9:50 a.m. IST, the Nifty 50 was down 0.73% at 22,647.90, while the BSE Sensex fell 0.49% to 73,343.98, according to Reuters. The broader small-cap and mid-cap indices each declined by around 1.2%, reflecting widespread selling pressure.

Brent crude futures rose 1.7% to $110.70 per barrel during the reported trading period. Oil prices remained elevated amid an intensifying Middle East conflict and further attacks in Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Houthi movement. The United States also ordered some diplomats and their family members to leave its missions in Saudi Arabia.

Higher crude prices pose several risks for the Indian economy. They can increase imported inflation, raise fuel and transportation costs, put pressure on the government’s fiscal position and reduce profit margins for businesses that depend heavily on petroleum-based inputs.

Interest-rate uncertainty added to market concerns. Minutes from the Reserve Bank of India’s latest monetary policy meeting, released on Wednesday, indicated that some members of the rate-setting panel believed further rate increases could be necessary to control inflation. However, tighter monetary policy can also weigh on borrowing, investment and economic growth.

Fifteen of the 16 major sectoral indices were trading lower. Heavyweights HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries fell 1.6% and 1%, respectively. Oil-marketing companies, paint manufacturers and tyre makers also came under pressure as investors assessed the potential impact of higher crude costs on operating expenses and profitability.

Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services declined 6% after several brokerages flagged concerns about rising funding costs and risks linked to insurance distribution reforms. The movement highlighted how company-specific concerns were adding to broader market weakness.

Market participants are likely to monitor crude oil prices, developments in the Middle East, inflation signals and corporate earnings for clues about the market’s direction. The duration of the oil price surge and its effect on India’s inflation outlook will remain important factors for investors.
