India Warns US Tariffs Could Hurt Ties

India has warned that new US tariff measures targeting countries that purchase Russian oil could affect bilateral relations, while reaffirming its commitment to energy security and diversified energy sourcing.
The US House of Representatives has passed legislation authorising President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries including India and China to reduce their dependence on Russian energy. The bill will now require Trump's signature to become law.
India's Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi had already raised concerns with US officials about the potential impact of the measures on bilateral ties and international energy markets. The ministry also said India would take necessary steps to protect its trade and economic interests.
India, the world's third-largest oil importer, remains a major buyer of Russian crude. The government has maintained that its large population and economy require secure, affordable and reliable energy supplies, and said future sourcing would continue to depend on market conditions and diversification.
Indian refiners have already arranged oil supplies for September and October, including Russian crude, according to sources cited by Reuters. Refiners are seeking government discussions with Washington over possible exemptions or quotas, amid concerns that additional tariffs could raise costs and pressure margins.
