Indian equity markets are set for a cautious session on Wednesday as investors assess elevated U.S. Treasury yields, crude oil prices and the upcoming Federal Reserve decision. GIFT Nifty was trading around 20 points higher in early trade, suggesting a muted opening after the previous session’s sharp decline.
The Sensex fell 777.94 points, or 1.04%, to 74,003.82 on Tuesday, while the Nifty 50 declined 279.50 points, or 1.19%, to 23,118.60. The Nifty ended at a five-month low as global financial conditions remained under pressure.
Global markets are also awaiting the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy decision. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield briefly moved above 5%, while markets were pricing in a high probability of a 25-basis-point rate increase. Higher U.S. yields can influence global capital flows and investor sentiment toward emerging markets.
Crude oil remains another key factor for Indian markets. Brent crude was around $108.32 a barrel in early Wednesday trading, although prices edged lower after an unexpected increase in U.S. crude inventories. Continued supply concerns linked to disruptions in Saudi Arabia are keeping energy markets volatile.
The Indian rupee also remained under pressure, closing at ₹95.96 against the U.S. dollar in the previous session. A weaker rupee combined with elevated crude prices can increase concerns over India's import costs and inflation.
Foreign institutional investors remained net sellers, withdrawing ₹2,977.86 crore from Indian equities, while domestic institutional investors bought shares worth ₹2,686.05 crore. The contrasting flows remain an important factor for market sentiment.
Asian markets were mixed in early trading. Japan’s Nikkei 225 slipped 0.17%, while the Topix gained 0.55%. South Korea’s Kospi was largely unchanged, while the Kosdaq declined 0.69%. Investors across the region were also monitoring the Federal Reserve decision and developments in global energy markets.
With Fed policy, crude prices, bond yields, currency movements and geopolitical tensions all influencing sentiment, Indian equities remain sensitive to developments across global markets.
