Rupee Faces Fresh Pressure

Markets Await Fed Rate Decision

The Indian rupee is expected to remain under pressure this week as elevated oil prices and expectations of a U.S. Federal Reserve rate hike weigh on market sentiment. The rupee fell more than 1% last week, closing at ₹95.55 against the U.S. dollar.

Rising oil prices, which have moved above $100 a barrel, are adding pressure on India’s import costs. Renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and attacks affecting Saudi energy infrastructure have further increased concerns about global oil supplies.

Investors are also closely watching the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision. Expectations of a 25-basis-point rate hike have strengthened following hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data, creating additional pressure on emerging-market currencies such as the rupee.

Indian government bonds are also under pressure, with yields rising for a fourth consecutive week. The benchmark 10-year government bond yield ended last week at 7.0233%, while traders expect it to move between 6.98% and 7.10% in the near term.

Markets will closely monitor the Fed’s decision, U.S. economic data and developments in oil prices for signals on the future direction of the rupee and Indian bond yields.e the news article content here...
