Synopsys, OpenAI Team Up on Chip Design AI

The multi-year partnership will develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialised AI model designed to work with electronic design automation tools for semiconductor development.
Synopsys and OpenAI have signed a multi-year agreement to jointly develop an artificial intelligence model specifically designed for semiconductor chip design. The model, called GPT-Synopsys, will combine OpenAI's AI capabilities with Synopsys' electronic design automation tools and chip-design expertise.
GPT-Synopsys will be trained and tuned for chip-design workflows that begin with descriptions of circuits and extend through the placement of billions of transistors on silicon. The companies said the model will be designed to help engineers work through design trade-offs and optimisation tasks.
KEY HIGHLIGHT
GPT-Synopsys will be specifically developed to use Synopsys' electronic design automation tools for semiconductor design workflows.
Under the agreement, OpenAI will license Synopsys' EDA software for development of the specialised model. The companies will collaborate on research and development and jointly take the technology to customers under a shared revenue framework.
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman said the model is intended to help engineers shorten parts of the chip-design process by assisting with the optimisation and trade-offs involved in developing increasingly complex semiconductors.
BUSINESS OUTLOOK
Synopsys said it expects fiscal 2027 revenue growth of about 15%, above the 11.19% analyst estimate cited by Reuters. Its shares rose as much as 7% after the partnership and forecast announcement.
The partnership comes as semiconductor companies face growing demand for more powerful chips for artificial intelligence and other computing workloads. AI-assisted engineering is increasingly being incorporated into chip-design processes as manufacturers seek to manage more complex designs and shorten development cycles.
Synopsys and OpenAI said they will make GPT-Synopsys available to customers globally as the model and related workflows are developed. The agreement gives OpenAI access to specialised semiconductor design software while allowing Synopsys to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its engineering tools.
