Narendra Modi inaugurates Chennai Metro Phase II stretch and advances transport, port, railway and research infrastructure projects across Tamil Nadu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 11, 2026, inaugurated, dedicated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The projects span metro rail, highways, railways, ports, petroleum and education, with a focus on improving connectivity and supporting economic activity.
A major highlight was the inauguration of the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore. The corridor includes a distinctive 3.7-km double-decker structure and advanced signalling designed to support driverless operations. It is expected to improve connections between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre.
The programme also covered national highway projects worth around ₹3,700 crore and railway infrastructure initiatives, including the inauguration of five Amrit Bharat stations at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakudi and Namakkal. Rail projects are intended to improve passenger facilities and regional connectivity.
Port-related projects at Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port formed another part of the development programme. The initiatives are aimed at strengthening maritime infrastructure and supporting shipping, trade and industrial activity.
Modi also dedicated the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras to the nation. The centre focuses on advanced brain research, including three-dimensional mapping of human brains. The Prime Minister said the broader infrastructure programme would help ease daily travel, strengthen industry and trade, and create employment opportunities for young people.
The projects represent a combination of completed infrastructure being opened to the public and new initiatives being launched. Their implementation and longer-term impact will depend on project execution, service delivery and the extent to which the improved infrastructure supports regional economic activity.
