Headline Sawan Barwal Wins Historic Asian Games Marathon Silver
Goa election officials sent eight requests in seven days seeking an ECINet rollback facility after 97 voters were found eligible, but their names were still absent when the final SIR electoral roll was published, an Indian Express investigation has found.
India's Sawan Barwal won silver in the men's marathon at the 2026 Asian Games, ending the country's 44-year wait for a medal in the event while also lowering his own national record.
The 28-year-old finished the race in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 36 seconds, taking second place behind Japan's Ichitaka Yamashita, who won gold with a time of 2:10:51.

Barwal's achievement is particularly significant because this was only the second marathon of his career. Earlier in April 2026, at the Rotterdam Marathon, he became the first Indian to run the distance in under 2 hours and 12 minutes, breaking a national record held for 48 years by Shivnath Singh.
In Nagoya, Barwal improved that record again.
He remained among the leading runners from the early stages of the race. After the first five kilometres, Barwal was part of a six-man leading group and was only one second behind China's Feng Peiyou.
By the halfway point, Barwal and Yamashita were running side-by-side, reaching the mark in 1:05:54.
The decisive phase came after 30 kilometres as the pace increased and the leading group began to break apart. Barwal briefly lost ground on an uphill section but recovered on the descent to remain in contention for the podium.
By the 40km mark, Yamashita had established a lead of around 26 seconds. Barwal maintained his pace through the closing kilometres to secure the silver medal.

Before Barwal's performance, India's last Asian Games medal in the men's marathon had come at the 1982 New Delhi Games, when Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan won bronze.
Barwal has now become only the fourth Indian marathon runner to win an Asian Games medal and the first Indian to achieve the feat outside the country.
His transition to marathon running has also been remarkably quick. Barwal, who joined the Indian Army in 2019, spent much of his athletics career competing in middle- and long-distance track events before shifting his focus to the 42.195km marathon distance about a year ago.
Under coach Scott Simmons, his preparation included running around 190 kilometres per week, three marathon simulations during the three months before the Asian Games and a training stint in Colorado Springs arranged through the Athletics Federation of India.
Barwal's silver adds another athletics medal to India's campaign at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and marks one of the country's most significant achievements in long-distance running in recent decades.
