Traffic diversions and regulated movement are planned around central Delhi on October 2 as security is tightened ahead of a proposed protest.

Delhi Traffic Police has issued a traffic advisory for October 2, 2026, warning commuters of restrictions and regulated movement around Jantar Mantar and adjoining areas in New Delhi. Travellers have been advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow additional travel time and avoid affected stretches wherever possible.

The advisory covers areas around Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, GPO, Tolstoy Marg, Jantar Mantar Road, Parliament Street and adjoining roads. Traffic may be diverted or regulated at key junctions, with motorists asked to follow instructions from traffic personnel and use alternative routes where necessary.

KEY ROUTES AFFECTED
Connaught Place, Patel Chowk, GPO, Tolstoy Marg, Jantar Mantar Road and Parliament Street are among the areas expected to face traffic restrictions or diversions.

The measures are linked to a proposed demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest has been called by the All India Students' Association (AISA), Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha and Supreme Court advocate Prashant Bhushan, and was scheduled to begin at 11 am on Friday.

Delhi Police has denied permission for the proposed gathering. Additional Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces personnel have been deployed at Jantar Mantar and other locations across the New Delhi district. Barricades have also been installed at several entry points and sensitive locations.

The organisers are seeking the resignation or impeachment of the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging irregularities in electoral rolls and the conduct of elections. They have also raised objections to the Election Commission's handling of the Special Intensive Revision exercise. These are allegations made by the organisers.

ADVICE FOR COMMUTERS
Avoid Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street, Ashoka Road and nearby affected stretches where feasible. Check current traffic updates, follow on-ground police directions and allow extra time for travel.
