Cabinet Clears ₹1,789 Crore Delhi Traffic System
The AI-enabled Intelligent Traffic Management System will cover 42 corridors with adaptive signals, automated enforcement and priority movement for ambulances.
The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹1,789.52 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for Delhi, clearing the way for a technology-led overhaul of traffic management in the capital. The project will be implemented by the Delhi Police across 42 identified traffic corridors.
The system will use real-time traffic data, adaptive traffic signals, automated enforcement and integrated command-and-control infrastructure to manage road traffic more dynamically. The project is scheduled to be implemented in three phases over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance.

The ₹1,789.52 crore project will cover 42 traffic corridors, 1,092 adaptive traffic-control locations and 1,029 enforcement locations across Delhi.
Under the new system, signal timings can be adjusted according to prevailing traffic conditions, while signals along important corridors can be coordinated to reduce unnecessary stoppages. The government said the system is intended to make better use of Delhi's existing road network as vehicle numbers have grown faster than road infrastructure.
Emergency vehicles will receive priority through the system, including green corridors for ambulances. Real-time detection of congestion, slow-moving traffic and road incidents will also allow Delhi Police to respond more quickly and introduce diversions when required.
SMART ENFORCEMENT
The system will support automated detection of violations including red-light and stop-line violations, speeding, wrong-way driving, illegal parking and failure to use helmets or seat belts.
The project will integrate traffic regulation, enforcement and commuter information through Traffic Command and Control Centres supported by a secure Data Centre and Disaster Recovery infrastructure. Variable Message Signs and digital platforms will provide information on congestion, diversions, parking availability and prevailing traffic conditions.
Delhi Police will implement the project through a Master System Integrator selected through competitive bidding. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) will provide technical support as the Project Management Consultant, including technical scrutiny, monitoring, validation and acceptance during implementation and operation.
