Gross Goods and Services Tax revenue reaches ₹2.04 lakh crore, supported by growth in domestic collections and import-related taxes.

India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection rose 14.7% year-on-year to ₹2.04 lakh crore in September 2026, according to government data reported by Reuters. The collection totalled approximately $21.25 billion.

The latest figures show that gross GST revenue remained above the ₹2 lakh crore mark for the third consecutive month, reflecting growth in tax collections from domestic economic activity and imports.

SEPTEMBER COLLECTIONS
Gross GST revenue reached ₹2.04 lakh crore, up 14.7% from the same month a year earlier.

Gross GST revenue from domestic transactions increased 10.1% year-on-year to approximately ₹1.38 lakh crore. Revenue from imports recorded stronger growth, rising 25.9% to ₹65,525 crore.

After accounting for refunds, net GST revenue increased 18.1% year-on-year to approximately ₹1.77 lakh crore. Total refunds during September declined 3% to ₹27,001 crore, contributing to the faster growth in net collections.

IMPORT-RELATED REVENUE
Gross GST collections from imports rose 25.9% to ₹65,525 crore, outpacing the 10.1% growth in domestic gross GST revenue.

For April to September 2026, cumulative gross GST collections stood at ₹12.46 lakh crore, an increase of 11.6% compared with the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

GST collections are closely tracked as an indicator of tax revenue and economic activity. The September figures show higher collections from both domestic transactions and imports, although the monthly tax data alone does not establish the overall pace of economic growth.
