Indian Automakers Report Mixed September Sales

Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai and several other manufacturers recorded year-on-year growth, while tractor sales and domestic two-wheeler demand faced pressure.
Indian automobile manufacturers reported mixed sales performance in September 2026, with several passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle makers recording year-on-year growth. Tractor sales declined at Mahindra & Mahindra and Escorts Kubota, while exports supported volumes for several two-wheeler manufacturers.
Maruti Suzuki reported total sales of 2.36 lakh units, up 24% from a year earlier. Domestic sales increased 30% to 1.91 lakh units, while exports rose 5% to 44,219 units. Utility vehicle sales climbed 62% to 78,911 units.
PASSENGER VEHICLE SALES
Tata Motors reported passenger vehicle sales of 70,210 units, up 15% year-on-year. Hyundai Motor India recorded total sales of 77,916 units, an increase of 10.8%.
Mahindra & Mahindra reported total automotive sales of 1,14,874 units, up 15% year-on-year. Its domestic utility vehicle sales rose 14% to 64,092 units. However, total tractor sales declined 21% to 52,100 units, including a 23% fall in domestic sales.
In commercial vehicles, Tata Motors reported total sales of 51,062 units, up 42.4% year-on-year. Ashok Leyland recorded sales of 24,049 units, an increase of 28%, while Eicher Motors' commercial vehicle business, VE Commercial Vehicles, reported sales of 11,396 units, up 49.6%.
TWO-WHEELER PERFORMANCE
TVS Motor's total sales rose 24% to 6.72 lakh units, while Hero MotoCorp reported domestic sales growth of 14% to 7.4 lakh units. Royal Enfield sales increased 8% to 1.34 lakh units.
Bajaj Auto reported total sales of 5.38 lakh units, up 5% year-on-year. Exports increased 32% to 2.43 lakh units, but domestic two-wheeler sales declined 9% to 2.94 lakh units. The company's overall sales growth remained below market expectations.
The tractor segment faced weaker numbers. Escorts Kubota reported total sales of 15,214 units, down 17% year-on-year. Mahindra & Mahindra's tractor sales also declined, although its tractor exports increased 62% to 1,892 units.
The September figures reflect different demand trends across vehicle categories. Passenger and commercial vehicle sales grew at several manufacturers, while tractor sales and domestic two-wheeler demand remained areas of weakness. Export performance varied across companies and helped offset softer domestic demand in some segments.
